"... Paul comes to his work
with significant life experiences that serve him well...  He is mature, thoughtful, clinically curious, non-judgmental, and works at an unusual level of sophistication..."

"... I am certain that among
the many things Paul brings it is
his ability to impart confidence, to share enthusiasm, to build self-
esteem that is most valuable...  He
has talent, certainly, but most importantly he has that intangible
thing called character."

Susan Taylor

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES

Paul Chirumbolo provides
psychotherapy by appointment
as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Areas of special interest include treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, making change in one’s life, cultural and sexual identity matters, trauma, and the related
issues of loss and abuse.

THE COURSE OF TREATMENT

Services begin with a full psychosocial assessment combined with treatment planning. While not imposed as a condition of treatment, clients are encouraged to maintain a dream journal. Take home readings are
offered to provide psychological education and to further incubate the psychoactive process.

In-session work focuses on client’s life experiences, feeling states, and interpersonal dynamics – both in relationships outside the counseling room, as well as patterns of interacting with the therapist himself.

Dream work is often conducted as a means to address unconscious matters seeking to be brought to awareness.

In-session work can also include instruction on stress reduction, deep relaxation techniques and/or
other tools clients can use outside
of the office.

Experiential work is introduced to help clients move more directly into a subjective awareness of (1) root or causative life experiences, or original “woundings,” and (2) the adaptive / maladaptive patterns of behavior which resulted. Imaginal therapy (including deep relaxation / light trance / psychosynthesis / active imagination / psychodrama / journeying) is frequently employed to loosen psychological or intellectual defenses in order to conduct a dialogue and/or interact with disparate parts of one's self. This can also include additional experiential work, e.g. processing body sensations, journeying to identify new passions, and life coaching methods as the means to help clients define and implement a new vision of their life.

HOW TO ACCESS SERVICES

Anyone interested in receiving services must first make an appointment and complete a consultation session. During the consultation, Paul Chirumbolo will begin to gather information regarding the reason(s) the client is seeking services, and he will screen for other issues including substance abuse, suicidality/homicidality, domestic violence, and physical health concerns. This first session is also the opportunity for individuals to ask questions to help assure not only a quality of service, but also a level of commitment and participation in therapy.

Individuals are asked to bring identification and proof of income to the consultation session. Individuals with insurance that covers mental health services should bring their insurance information to the consultation, as well. We’re sorry, but government sponsored health coverage, e.g. Medicare and Medi-Cal, cannot be accepted.

PAYMENT FOR SERVICES

Payment is expected at the time that services are rendered unless otherwise discussed in advance.

Direct billing to insurance carriers will be made at the usual and customary rate.

The full service fee will be charged for any appointment cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

Insurance
Private mental health insurance is provided through a contract agreement between you and an insurance company or health maintenance organization (HMO). Many insurance plans or HMOs provide coverage for mental health services but limit your choice of service providers. Mental health service coverage also typically requires payment of a deductible or a “share” of the service cost. Check your policy carefully to determine what services and fees for services are covered and what types of referrals or prior authorizations you may need. If you are uncertain, call your insurance carrier directly to verify your benefits. You will need to tell them that mental health services are provided by an out-of-network provider working under the California Marriage and Family Therapy license.

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

The course of psychotherapy is cumulative and progressive, and regular attendance is very important in order for services to be beneficial for the client.

From a practical perspective, once an appointment day and time is established, that time is set aside for the client. If the client fails to keep the appointment, the appointment time will go unused.

From a therapeutic perspective, frequent cancellations or schedule changes are often directly related to naturally arising resistance or other such treatment issues. These are best discussed within the psychotherapy session itself.

Services should be requested only by individuals who understand and agree to the commitment required to attend on a regularly scheduled basis.

If a client is unable to keep an appointment, it is very important that the office is notified as soon as possible. The full appointment fee will be charged for any appointment cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

PROHIBITED BEHAVIOR

It is inappropriate for clients to be under the influence (or in possession) of alcohol, drugs or intoxicants of any kind during their appointment. Clients who engage in fighting, verbal abuse, acts of violence, or who bring weapons of any kind will be asked to leave and may be terminated from service.
